This memorial is a large stone with a bronze plaque embeded in one side of it. There is also a flag pole standing behind the stone. The entire monument is located in the center of a brick walkway at Central Fire Headquarters.

CHIEF OF DEPARTMENT
1923 - 1935

ON JULY 29, 1935 FIRE BROKE OUT AT THE DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS
GARAGE WHICH WAS THEN LOCATED ON THIS VERY SITE. BOX ALARM 73 WAS
SOUNDED BRINGING SAUGUS FIREMEN TO THE SCENE OF A FIRE THAT BY
NOW WAS CONSUMING MUCH OF THE BUILDING. MOMENTS LATER WHILE
LEADING HIS MEN IN A BATTLE AGAINST THE RAGING FLAMES ... A VIOLENT
EXPLOSION TOOK PLACE MORTALLY WOUNDING CHIEF JOY AND FIREMAN NORMAN HULL. TWO
DAYS LATER ON JULY 31, 1935 CHIEF MELLON R. JOY ANSWERED HIS NOBLE
CALLING WITH THE SUPREME SACRIFICE IN THE LINE OF DUTY PROTECTING
THE LIVES AND PROPERTY ON THE CITIZENS OF SAUGUS.
