| Notes:
At about 9 a.m. on Ash Wednesday, the school caught fire as a result of overheated pipes. As the fire spread, chaos ensued. Poor conditions and planning contributed to the chaos and eventually jammed shut. Students became trapped in the building. The result was the death of nearly half of the students in attendance.
Today, a memorial garden sits at the site of the tragedy. A new school building was built adjacent to the site in 1910, but it was abandoned in the 1970's.
This incident was one of the catalysts for improved fire prevention and fire safety codes in schools and public buildings.
