900 people were in the theater when a fire started back stage. It was believed to be caused by a gas light too close to extra props. The fire burned for some time until it was discovered. Some people died as a result of being trampled while others died as a direct result of the fire.

103 unidentified victims are buried under the 30 foot tall monument that stands in the cemetery.
