Twelve firefighters were killed during operations when a section of the roof collapsed on the theater. A thirteenth firefighter died from his injuries several days later.
The monument is a permanent reminder of the sacrifice made by the thirteen firefighters. It commemorates what is still one of the largest losses of firefighters in this nation's history.
